PARAGOULD, ARK – The Pocahontas Redskins defeated the Paragould Rams 42-24 Friday night. The Redskins improve to 1-1 while the Rams fall to 0-2.

Paragould received the opening kickoff Friday night in the non-conference matchup. Their drive began at their own 34-yard line. Senior quarterback Trent Teager marched the Rams 56 yards over nine plays, down to the Pocahontas 10-yard line.

Paragould fumbled on the next play and sophomore cornerback/wide receiver Lane Looney scooped up the ball and returned it for a 90-yard touchdown for the Redskins. The extra point attempt was no good, and the Redskins took an early 6-0 lead with 8:18 left in the first quarter.

The Rams started their next drive at their own 20-yard line. On the third play of the drive, Teager threw an interception and Pocahontas took over on offense.

The Redskins started the drive at the Paragould 42-yard line. Their drive didn’t last long, as Adams found Looney wide open on the first play, who was finally chased down at the 1-yard line. After the 41-yard gain, the running back Malik Johnson punched it in from one yard out. Adams ran into the endzone for the two-point conversion, giving the Redskins a 14-0 lead.

The first quarter drama wasn’t done after that, though. On the next drive the Rams threw yet another interception, this time picked off by Jonathon Jacoby at the Redskin 35-yard line and returned it to midfield.

The Rams defense stepped their game up. On first down, the Rams stuffed the Redskins for a loss of one. On second down, they got a huge tackle for a six-yard loss, but that isn’t all. As Adams rolled out trying to find a target, there was a holding penalty deep in Redskin territory. The penalty was 10 yards from the spot of the foul, which backed Pocahontas up to their own 16-yard line. On third-and-42, Adams was sacked for a six-yard loss. Pocahontas punted out of the endzone on fourth-and-50. I had never seen a fourth-and-50 situation before.

The Rams took over at their own 48-yard line. On first down, the Rams fumbled, giving the Redskins the ball back at midfield. That was the last play of the crazy first quarter.

Pocahontas couldn’t get their offense going after the turnover and faced a fourth down situation. They lined up in a punt formation but the snap went over the punters head and rolled back to the Pocahontas 20-yard line where it was recovered. The Rams took over in the red zone.

They were unable to score, though, and turned it over on downs.

Paragould finally found their rhythm late in the second quarter. Teager opening up the scoring with a three-yard touchdown run with 3:23 to play before the half. Teager then punched in the two-point conversion to cut the Pocahontas lead to 14-8 going into the half.

I would be amiss if I did not mention how astounding the Paragould Pride band was. I was honestly blown away, as this high school band is better than some college bands I’ve seen. If you ever have the chance to watch the Paragould Pride, you take that opportunity.

“The band was worth the price of admission,” said my associate, Kevin Hulett.

It didn’t take long after the second-half kickoff for the scoring to get started back up. The Redskins opened up their passing game, as Adams found Derrick Kimble for a 46-yard gain down to the 20-yard line. On the next play, Adams ran it in from 20-yards out to extend the Pocahontas lead. The two-point pass was caught by Jaden Young in the endzone to make it a 22-8 advantage for Pocahontas.

Paragould wasn’t ready to give up. Near the end of the second quarter, Tyler Rosten ran it in for a one-yard touchdown. Teager ran in the two-point conversion to cut the Pocahontas lead to 22-16 with 23 seconds left in the third quarter.

Early in the fourth, the Redskins faced a fourth-and-one at the Paragould 26-yard line. The Rams jumped offside, resulting in a first down for Pocahontas. They took advantage of that mistake and ended the drive with a two-yard touchdown. The Redskins then led 28-16.

Teager showed off his speed on the next drive, breaking off a 48-yard run to give the Rams a first down at the Pocahontas 18-yard line. On the very next play, Teager ran it in from 18-yards out with 8:36 left to play. Bradley Baltz got the two-point conversion and the Rams were right back in it, as Pocahontas only held a 28-24 lead.

Paragould attempted an onside kick, but it was unsuccessful. The Redskins took over at the 48-yard line. Adams then found Lake Fletcher for a 30-yard gain down to the 18-yard line. Adams followed that up with a 15-yard strike to Kimble down to the 3-yard line. Pocahontas then punched it in from three yards out to extend their lead to 36-24.

Paragould had one last effort but fell short as they turned the ball over on downs on the ensuing drive.

Pocahontas finished the night off with a 69-yard touchdown run from Adams to put the game away for good and to set the final score, 42-24.
