PARAGOULD, ARK — The Valley View Blazers will travel across the county line tomorrow to take on the Paragould Rams in the first 5A East matchup of the year.
The Blazers will be looking to ride their momentum from last week’s 42-7 blowout against Highland into conference play when they visit the Rams. Paragould is hoping to get their season back on track after a rocky 0-3 start.
After starting 0-1, Valley View has reeled off back-to-back wins in impressive fashion.
In week 2 against Rivercrest, the Blazers trailed 29-22 with 7:43 left to play. Senior quarterback Joe Waleszonia scored on a 14-yard run and, after the made PAT by kicker Ben Brumfield, the score was tied.
Valley View got the ball back and Brumfield drilled a 42-yard field goal with just over a minute left to set the final score of 32-29.
To follow up that performance, the Blazers dominated the Highland Rebels from start to finish.
Paragould has not been so lucky, but with conference play upon us, this is a chance for a fresh start.
The Rams started their season with a 41-6 loss at Rivercrest. In their home opener, they played in a thriller against Pocahontas, but ultimately fell by a score of 42-24 (read my full article here). Last week, the Rams were defeated 40-20 at home against the Trumann Wildcats.
Valley View’s Waleszonia comes into the game averaging 157 passing yards and 67 rushing yards per game, while his backfield counterpart, senior running back Ryder Snell, is averaging 99.3 yards and two touchdowns per game on the ground. Watch out for this deadly duo Friday night.
This will be a game worth going to, even if you don’t have a dog in the fight. Everyone in attendance is in for a treat any time the Paragould Pride Band plays. They are by far the most talented high school band I have ever seen, and could easily beat several college bands in a head-to-head competition. You HAVE to go see these guys play. They will blow you away.
SlingShot Sports will be in attendance to cover the game. Kickoff is at 7 P.M. at Paragould High School. We hope to see you there.
