The SEC and the Power 5 in Super Bowl LI: A Strong Representation

Jan 25, 2018

JONESBORO, Ark — There’s a reason they’re called the Power 5. Out of the 125 total players in the Super Bowl, 97 of them are from Power 5 conferences.

The SEC and Pac 12 lead the way with 25 players each. The Big Ten is sitting at third with 22.

Conference Players
SEC 25
Pac 12 25
Big Ten 22
ACC 13
Big 12 12
American 8
Non-FBS 7
MAC 5
Mountain West 4
Conference USA 3
Independents 1
Sun Belt 0

The SEC has long been thought of as the best conference in college football, so I have decided to take a deeper look at it. Only 14 schools have more than two players on a Super Bowl roster. Four of those are SEC schools. Here’s a breakdown:

Stanford 5
Florida 4
Florida State 4
Michigan 4
Oregon 4
West Virginia 4
Wisconsin 4
Alabama 3
Arizona 3
Arkansas 3
Georgia 3
Nebraska 3
Rutgers 3
Texas 3

Of course, I have to show some love (bias?) towards these SEC schools. Of the 14 SEC schools, 12 have a player on a Super Bowl roster. Seven of those 12 have more than one. The only schools without a player in the big game are Kentucky and Missouri. Here’s a breakdown of each school and which players you can expect to see on Super Bowl Sunday.
