SEC Bracketology: Don’t Buy Into the Hype Just Yet

Feb 19, 2017

JONESBORO, Ark — Everyone and their mother is talking about the latest Bracketology rankings. Do yourself a favor, and ignore them.

I have been using ESPN RPI rankings and bracketology projections for most of my articles. I have found this method to be flawed. There were several errors and inconsistencies that I noticed while researching SEC RPI rankings (for instance, Penn State is ranked both 73rd and 77th in RPI).

Now, I have shifted my allegiance to CBS Sports. Thus, these numbers may contradict some that I have either put in articles or tweeted out (@ChaseGage1, free plug).

However, I find these numbers to much better represent the world of college basketball. Plus, the information is easier to obtain, which is always a big plus.

So let’s get down to it.

The talk has been that eight teams from the SEC will make the NCAA Tournament at the conclusion of the season. Those eight are Auburn, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, Alabama, Florida, Kentucky and Texas A&M. That seems pretty well to be the consensus. Where these teams will be seeded, however, leads to some controversy.

Arkansas fans woke up to the newest Joe Lundardi Bracketology rankings to see that the Hogs’ win over No. 21 Texas A&M by 19 points did not move them up. Arkansas still sits at a 10-seed while Texas A&M still sits as a six-seed.

That’s where I come in.

I have broken down the record of every team in the SEC based on their results versus RPI rankings. This will help paint a clearer picture of each team’s resume for the Big Dance in March.

I have created several tables with full resumes for each of the eight tournament-projected teams at the end of the article.

Enjoy, and let me know your thoughts on these numbers either in the comments or on Twitter (@ChaseGage1, another free plug).
