Senior Nigh at Bud Walton: A Class To Remember

Feb 27, 2018

by Chase Gage

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark — To say the outgoing senior class is special is an understatement. Tonight, the senior Hogs will play their final game at Bud Walton Arena against 14th-ranked Auburn in front of 19,000 of college basketball’s craziest fans.

Tonight, Anton Beard, Jaylen Barford, Daryl Macon, Dustin Thomas, Trey Thompson, Arlando Cook and JT Plummer will play their final home game in the Arkansas uniform. They will undoubtedly go down as one of the most successful senior classes in the school’s history.

Though only Beard and Thompson played four seasons for the Hogs, the last four years have been nothing short of historic and spectacular. In those last four years, Arkansas has an overall record of 89-44 (43-27 SEC).

That’s more wins than Stan Heath (82, five seasons) and John Pelphrey (69, four seasons) had in their respective runs as Arkansas head coach. It is also the most wins in a four-year span since 1995-1998 (94 under Nolan Richardson).

The Hogs have also made the NCAA Tournament twice in that span, with a likely third this season.

Take into account that six of these seven seniors have been here the last two seasons and the successes just keep stacking up. In the last two years, the Hogs have a record of 49-16 (and counting). For reference, here is every other instance in which the Hogs have won at least 49 games in a two year span:

Year Record Coach
2013-14 22-12 Mike Anderson
2014-15 27-9 Mike Anderson
Overall 49-21
1994-95 32-7 Nolan Richardson
1995-96 20-13 Nolan Richardson
Overall 52-20
1993-94 31-3 Nolan Richardson
1994-95 32-7 Nolan Richardson
Overall 63-10
1992-93 22-9 Nolan Richardson
1993-94 31-3 Nolan Richardson
Overall 53-12
1990-91 34-4 Nolan Richardson
1991-92 26-8 Nolan Richardson
Overall 60-12
1989-90 30-5 Nolan Richardson
1990-91 34-4 Nolan Richardson
Overall 64-9

1988-89 25-7 Nolan Richardson
1989-90 30-5 Nolan Richardson
Overall 55-12

1982-83 26-4 Eddie Sutton
1983-84 25-7 Eddie Sutton
Overall 51-11

1982-83 26-4 Eddie Sutton
Overall 49-10

1977-78 32-4 Eddie Sutton
1978-79 25-5 Eddie Sutton
Overall 57-9

1976-77 26-2 Eddie Sutton
1977-78 32-4 Eddie Sutton
Overall 58-6

With three more games guaranteed this season, hopefully that mark will look more and more impressive as this year plays out.

Here’s a list of other achievements this team has racked up over the last four seasons:

  • 2015 – Finished 2nd in the SEC, SEC Tournament Runner-Up, NCAA Round of 32 (Beat 12 Wofford, lost to 4 North Carolina)
  • 2017 – Finished 3rd in the SEC, SEC Tournament Runner-Up, NCAA Round of 32 (Beat 9 Seton Hall, lost to 1 North Carolina)

Switching things up to individual successes, these last two years have featured one of the greatest duos in Hog history.

Macon (986 points) and Barford (983) are set to become the 42nd and 43rd players in Arkansas history to reach 1,000 career points. They will be just the sixth and seventh to do so in two seasons. Two of the other five players to do so (Bobby Portis and Dusty Hannahs) played under Mike Anderson.

Macon averages 17.3 point per game this season and only needs 14 to crack 1,000, while Barford only needs 17 and averages 18.1 points per contest this year.

Without a doubt, this class will be remembered as one that continued Arkansas down the path to greatness. The following gives a profile for each senior, so they can have at least one last moment to shine.

They deserve the utmost love and respect from Razorback fans.

To all seven seniors, on behalf of everyone reading this, thank you, from the bottoms of our Hog Hats.
