JONESBORO, Ark — There has been much criticism of the officiating across the SEC this season. Arkansas fans, in particular, feel that their team is being unfairly officiated.
How do the Hogs stack up to the competition in terms of fouls and free throws?
Out of the 14 SEC teams, Arkansas comes in on top in terms of personal fouls for the season. In fact, out of 351 Division 1 basketball teams, the Hogs are in the top 40 in personal fouls with 20.5 per game.
In terms of free throw attempts, the Hogs fare much better as they sit at fifth in the conference with only South Carolina, Auburn and Kentucky getting to the stripe more often.
These numbers don’t tell the whole story, though.
I will never blame officiating for a win or a loss because, at the end of the day, the players must overcome any obstacles they face to achieve greatness. Some teams just face more obstacles than others.
The following is a table of fouls per game ranked from least to most in the NCAA. It is broken down into total fouls, fouls at home and fouls on the road:
|National Rank||Team||Fouls Per Game Total||Home||Away|
Next, we have a breakdown of each SEC game for Arkansas and how many fouls and free throws they and their opponent committed and attempted. When differentiating between home and away games and wins and losses, the differences are staggering.
Note: If you’re reading on your phone, turn it to landscape orientation (sideways) to get the full table. The mobile version cuts off half of the numbers.
|@ Miss State||26||11||12||40|
|@ Texas A&M||22||13||13||25|
|@ Ole Miss||22||21||27||31|
|TOTAL||371 (+37)||334||388 (-86)||474|
|HOME||178 (-13)||191||228 (+2)||226|
|AWAY||193 (+50)||143||160 (-88)||248|
|WINS||203 (-3)||206||252 (-19)||271|
|LOSSES||168 (+40)||128||136 (-67)||203|
Draw your own conclusions.
For the Hogs to win in the postseason, this issue must be addressed. Not many games in March are won when your opponent earns more points from the charity stripe.
